THE BEST CITIES TO TRAVEL ALONE TO WITHIN THE U.S.

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

Ready to see the world but have no one to go with? Traveling solo is one of the most exciting and liberating things one can do in their life. For me, factors that make a city great for solo travel are: modes of transportation, safety, locals, culture, and number of sights to see. I know traveling alone can be scary, but it is so worth it.

Here are the best cities to travel alone around the United States

NEW YORK CITY

New York City is one of those places that can be an adventure for anyone and everyone. It is perfect for a romantic escape, girlfriend getaway, or a solo trip. There are so many things to do in New York City no matter the time of year. Each time I visit, I am able to see the city in a completely different light. New York City's transportation system is insanely efficient granted the size of the city and the list of sights one can see are endless.

WASHINGTON D.C.

Whether you are a history lover or are wanting to learn more about America's History, Washington D.C. is the place to visit. In my experience, museums and galleries in D.C. are perfect for solo travel, due to them being free and many within walking distance from each other.

WILMINGTON, NC

This one is for all my One Tree Hill fans out there. Wilmington makes for the perfect destination getaway when traveling solo. The city is the most accessible coastal area in the state with beautiful riverfront views. Wilmington's river-walk winds along the Cape Fear River, connecting many of the city's shops, cafés, and nightlife with waterfront hotels, parks and the Port City Marina.

PORTLAND, OR

Portland is one of those U.S. cities that is very easy to navigate and explore without getting lost. It is a laid back city with a small town feel, filled with charming neighborhoods and a hip downtown area. Not only is it great for city life but if you choose to venture outside you will find amazing hiking and biking trails.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Last but certainly not least, San Francisco deserves a spot on every solo traveler’s bucket list. You can visit the famous Golden Gate Bridge, hit up the Full House house or take a boat ride out to Alcatraz which was once a former prison.
