5 WAYS TO SPEND LESS ON TRAVEL

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

From students to parents to busy professionals, there are numerous reasons that people feel like they can't take that trip they have been desperately wanting too. Many blame it on cost. While travel can be pricy when it comes to airfare, accommodations, and activities, there are alternative ways to travel that not only save money but can allow you to have amazing experiences.

Here are 5 ways to spend less on travel

FLIGHTS

Most destinations can be the most expensive in the summer. If possible, traveling in the off-season will be more cost affordable. Knowing how to find cheap plane tickets will help you save a good chunk of your upfront costs. The number one thing is to be patient and to find a good price you may have to do some extensive searching.

Here are some ways I find cheap fights:

  • Use the Hopper App and keep an eye on deals when they arise

  • Check airlines’ low fare calendar

  • Check Skyscanner to compare fares

  • Have Google Flights alert you when a low fare comes up

  • Look for indirect flights or nearby airports

  • Avoid extra fees (like choosing my seat, priority boarding, and checked bags)

There will be times when taking the bus, train, ferry or driving may be the cheaper option so decide what makes the most sense for your trip.

HELPFUL TIP: If you have been thinking about getting a travel reward credit card, I recommend applying for one before a big trip or purchase. Some of the biggest benefits are earning points to use for free flights and hotels. I had the Southwest Credit Card for years and was able to solely purchase every flight with points. There are some cards that offer travel protection when you pay for a trip with that specific card.

ACCOMMODATIONS

I have had great luck with Airbnb and Vrbo when it comes to finding accommodation cheaper than a hotel. It can be more cost-effective if you find a place that includes a kitchen you can cook in. If you do have a travel credit card/card, you can apply points to get a discounted rate. I also use my AAA account number when booking at select hotels for a discount. When my budget it tight, I have opted for hostels. There are many hostels that offer private rooms or are gender based.

TRANSPORTATION

Ridshare can get expensive so decide what mode of transportation will be best if you are going to be traveling a lot during your stay. Metros are often the best way to travel, and I recommend going underground for travel in almost any major city. Google Maps has made it super easy with their public transit option that allows you to see when there will be departing buses, trains, etc. All you have to do is type in where you want to go and it will tell you exactly which lines and busses you would need to take to get there. A lot of big cities have cheap bike or scooter rentals that allow you to pick up and return around the city. If you do feel like you will be needing a car I recommend downloading the app Turo before opting for a rental agency car.

ACTIVITIES

One of the best ways to spend less on travel is to make a break down of your budget and what activities would fit that budget. Some of the best memories I have are from experiences I didn't pay for.

Here are some ideas for ways to save on activities:

  • Discounts: Always look for special rates for seniors, students, kids, groups, military or whatever may apply to you.

  • Specials: Sites like Groupon, RetailMeNot, and LivingSocial offer major discounts and can be a good source for local events.

  • Free Activities: Many major tourist attractions are free or discounted on certain days. You can find an endless list of free activities for most big cities.

  • All-inclusive Sightseeing Tours: If you’re visiting for the first time and you know you want to see it all, consider hop-on/hop-off buses or city passes that’ll take you everywhere.

DINING

Food is a cost that I feel most don't fully take into consideration when traveling. However, some of the best meals I've had while traveling were authentic and budget-friendly.

Here are some ideas for ways to save on dining:

  • Included accommodation breakfasts: Take advantage of included breakfasts at hotels and hotels. Always ask at check-in for times so you are not late.

  • Grocery Shopping: If you are provided with a kitchen, stocking up at the local grocery store on breakfast, snacks and more can save loads of money.

  • Happy Hours: Do your research and see what local restaurants have happy hours

  • Refillable Water Bottle: You would think water would be free, however, buying plastic water bottles adds up.

  • Food Trucks: Some of my favorite and most memorable meals have been from food trucks. This type of cuisine is usually cheaper and quicker as well.

  • Know How to Tip: Few countries tip as much as the US does and in some places tipping is even rude. Knowing the tipping customs can help save tremendously.
